Used car inspection checklist before buying
A compact checklist for reviewing a used car before payment, a seller call, or an in-person inspection.
Before calling the seller
Save the listing link, VIN, plate number, mileage, model year, and photos. If any key data is missing, ask the seller to send it before you arrange a visit.
Documents and history
- compare the VIN in the registration document, on the body, and in the listing;
- check the number of owners and the latest registration date;
- review accident, lien, theft, and restriction records;
- compare the stated mileage with service history.
Vehicle inspection
Inspect the body in daylight. Uneven panel gaps, paint traces on seals, uneven tire wear, and dashboard warnings should be photographed and reviewed calmly.
When to walk away
If the seller refuses to share the VIN, blocks a workshop inspection, or pushes for an advance payment, it is safer to pause the deal. AutoPick helps collect open-source data and turn it into a clear buying recommendation.
